Nouvelle Zelande : L'ile du nord

Après un passage difficile à la douane où on a failli payer 400$ d'amende pour avoir oublier de déclarer l'importation de boue sur nos chaussures de marche, nous voilà en Nouvelle Zélande. C'est un changement complet de paysage et de météo, on voit des collines verdoyantes à perte de vue et il fait très frais.
On a loué un van pour une semaine et on parcourt l’île du nord (c'est bientôt l'hiver et il fait très froid sur l’île du Sud, on la réserve pour un autre voyage).

On commence notre périple avec le Kaima Mamaku Forest Park et une ballade dans les gorges de Karangahake qui nous mène dans les anciennes mines d'or peuplées de vers luisants. La suite du voyage nous mène à Roturua et Wai-O-Tapu ou l’activité géothermique est vraiment impressionnante : les environs fument de partout , le sol est chaud , ça sent le soufre partout ( odeur d’œuf pourri ) et c'est ultra coloré. On apprend que l'eau tire ses couleurs bleues turquoises et vert fluo des minéraux qui sont dégagés du sol.

On termine notre visite de l île du nord par la très renommée "Alpine Crossing Treck" dans le parc national de Tongariro. L'endroit nous a tellement bluffés qu'on lui consacrera un article d'ici peu.

After a hard time with the customs where we almost had to pay $400, we are in New Zealand. We actually forgot to declare the import of mud on our walking shoes :)


This is a complete change of scenery and weather, the air is very cool and the dry OZ bush has been replaced with green hills. We rented a van for a week and traveled on the North Island (it's almost winter and it is too cold on the South Island so we keep it for another trip).


We began our journey with the Kaima Mamaku Forest Park and a walk in the Karangahake Gorge which leads us into the old gold mines where thousand of glowworms lives. We then headed to Roturua and Wai-O-Tapu where the geothermal activity is quite impressive: smoke everywhere, warm ground , smells of sulfur and very colorful scenery. We learned that the water get its blue and green colors from the minerals that emerged from the ground.


We end our tour of the North Island by the renowned "Alpine Crossing Trek" in the Tongariro National Park. The place was so amazing that we will devote an article on it very soon shortly.
