La trek du Salkantai nous amène à Aguas Calientes après 4 jours de marche. L'objectif de cette dernière étape est la visite du Machu Pichu. On pensait que ça allait être de tout repos mais ça c'était avant le jours J. On se lève donc a 3h45 du matin afin d'être les premiers et on entame cette journée avec plus de 1500 marches et un dénivelé de 400m. Le site est recouvert d'épais nuage à notre arrivée vers 6h. Notre guide entame la visite du site avec quelques explications toutes aussi floues que le brouillard qui nous entoure. Personne ne semble réellement être sur a 100% de l'histoire du site ce qui rajoute un petit côté mystique à l'endroit.
On entame vers 10h l'ascension de la montagne Machu Pichu ( 2000 marches de plus et un nouveau dénivelé de 500m ) et là surprise: les nuages disparaissent et on a une vue digne de carte postale sur l'ancienne cité. On passera 1h là haut avant d'entamer la descente et de profiter quelques instants de plus de cet endroit mythique.
Si vous regardez la dernière photo à la verticale ( et plus précisément les montagnes ) vous verrez un des nombreux secrets que cache le site. On aura beau l'avoir vu des centaines de fois en images, cartes postales et dans des documentaires, cet endroit vaut vraiment le coup d'être vu de ses propres yeux et la trek qui nous y a emmené n'a fait qu'améliorer l'expérience.

The salkantay trek brought us to the village of Agua Calientes after 4 days. The last objective was the visit of the Machu Pichu. We thought it would be a piece of cake ...well forget about it. We woke up at 3:45 am in order to be the first at the ticket office and began with more than 1500 steps and 400m of hill walking. The site was covered with thick clouds when we arrived at 6am and Elias (our guide) started the visit with some explanation as clear as the fog around us. Actually, nobody seems to be 100% sure of the history of the site which adds a little mystical dimension to the place.
We then start, around 10am, the walk to get to the top of the Machu Picchu Mountain (2000 steps and 500m of hill walking ) and sudenly ... surprise !!! The clouds disapear and we get the so well known stunning view of the Machu Pichu. We stay there 1h before getting back and enjoy this wonderfull site an extra hour.
If you put the last picture to the vertical (and watch the mountains) you will see one of the hidden secret of this site. We have seen the Machu Pichu hundred times on pictures, postcards and in documentaries and were still stunned at the end. A hightlight in our south american trip !
